In a small village surrounded by dense forests, there lived an old widow named Mbok Sirni. She was known as a kind-hearted woman, but her life always felt lonely because she had no children.
Every night, she prayed for a child who could accompany her in her old age. One stormy night, as heavy rain poured over the village, [[a loud knock echoed from her door]].
Knock … knock … knock …
When she opened it, a gigantic creature stood before her. His skin was dark green, and his glowing red eyes shone in the darkness.
“I am Buto Ijo,” the giant said. “I can give you a child.”
With trembling hands, Mbok Sirni listened to the creature’s offer.
Buto Ijo handed her a golden cucumber seed and said:
“Plant this seed. You will have a daughter. But when she becomes an adult, she will belong to me."
Because she longed so deeply for a child, Mbok Sirni accepted the agreement. Several months later, a glowing golden cucumber grew behind her house. When she opened it, she found a beautiful baby girl smiling warmly inside. She named her Timun Emas.
[[Years passed.]]
Timun Emas had grown as a sweet, dilligent and smart 16-year old girl.
Timun Emas wondered of how she was born to this world since she knew that Mbok Sirni's husband was never being mentioned.
Mbok Sirni said, "You were given by a creature called Buto Ijo".
Timun Emas asked again, "How was this Buto Ijo, Mbok?"
Mbok Sirni answered,
"I will answer this when you are ready".
After having the conversation with Timun Emas, Mbok Sirni realized that Buto Ijo will come soon.
[[Night came.]]
Timun Emas stopped running and looked back at him from a distance.
Timun Emas gave thanks to God Almighty for saving her from the cruel giant. After that, Timun Emas and Mbok Sirni lived happily and peacefully together.
THE END.Buto Ijo immediately chased her into the forest.
While running, Timun Emas threw the first bag containing cucumber seeds. Suddenly, a thick cucumber field appeared and wrapped around the giant’s body. Buto Ijo struggled furiously and finally managed to escape.
Timun Emas then threw the second bag filled with needles, and sharp bamboo trees instantly grew from the ground, piercing the giant’s feet. The giant screamed in pain, but he still continued chasing her.
As the chase continued, Timun Emas opened the third bag and spread the salt across the ground. In a moment, the forest transformed into a wide sea. Buto Ijo struggled greatly to cross it, but he eventually survived and continued chasing her.
Feeling exhausted and frightened, Timun Emas quickly threw the last bag containing shrimp paste. Suddenly, boiling mud formed beneath the giant’s feet and trapped him inside.
Buto Ijo roared angrily as he slowly sank into the hot mud. “Help me! I do not want to die!”, screamed the giant desperately. Instantly, the giant fell into it. In the end, the giant died.
[[Timun Emas stopped running]]At night, she dreamed about a good witch who was able to help by giving several //magical items//.
The next morning, her thought was right, Buto Ijo came and asked for Timun Emas to be returned.
"MBOK SIRNI!”, a thunderous voice roared. “I HAVE COME TO CLAIM MY PROMISE!”
Mbok Sirni was so afraid, but then tricked Buto Ijo because she remembered that there will be a help given by the witch.
Then, Mbok Sirni said, "She is still too young, her meat is not delicious enough. Two years later will be the best age. Just come back two years later."
At this very moment, Mbok Sirni answered the question from two years ago, whispering to Timun Emas,
[["Buto Ijo is a terrible monster!"]]
[["I am not sure whether he is good or evil"]]
It was the 18th birthday of Timun Emas.
Mbok Sirni was so happy that she was no longer lived alone for the last eighteen years. But at the same time, she got frightened again when she realized that Buto Ijo will come back.
Buto Ijo, came on time in the afternoon.
His loud voice shook the village as he shouted, "Where is Timun Emas? I have come to take her!”
Seeing her mother suffer, Timun Emas bravely stepped out from her hiding place. Mbok Sirni handed Timun Emas four magical items given by the witch: first, there are cucumber seeds, then, needles, salt, and shrimp paste.
“Use them when danger comes,” she said.
After receiving the items, Timun Emas shouted, “I am here, Buto Ijo! [[Catch me if you can!]]”
On the 18th birthday of Timun Emas, Mbok Sirni was so happy and frightened at the same time.
Yet, she must do what necessary. She handed over the magical items from the witch.
She explained, "Buto Ijo will come very soon. You must run. I give you these items for you to use when danger comes. In this pouch, there are cucumber seeds, needles, salt, and shrimp paste."
"You must be brave and think cleverly to use these items with strategy. Do you understand?", Mbok Sirni added.
Timun Emas nodded, "I understand, Mbok".
Not long after that, Buto Ijo appeared at night. They were both so afraid, but Timun Emas remembered that she must be brave and believed in herself.
[[Timun Emas ran into the forest]].
In that very dark night, Timun Emas ran into the forest.
Buto Ijo chased her relentlessly. When the giant almost caught her, Timun Emas threw the cucumber seeds, and instantly a giant cucumber field grew to block his path. But Buto Ijo destroyed it easily.
Timun Emas kept running until exhaustion nearly made her collapse. Suddenly, someone pulled her behind the roots of a massive tree.
“Quiet … he’s still searching nearby.”
Timun Emas was shocked to see a young man dressed in dark clothes with bright green eyes.
"My name is Arya, I want to help you,”he said softly.
Arya brought Timun Emas to a hidden cave behind a waterfall. For the first time since the chase began, she finally felt safe. But she was still suspicious.
“Why are you helping me?” she asked.
Arya stayed silent for a long moment before finally answering,
"Because Buto Ijo … is my adoptive father.”
This made Timun Emas shocked,
[["Should I believe him? I doubt him"]]
[["I do not think he is bad. I should go with him certainly."]]Arya guided Timun Emas deeper into the forest to hide from Buto Ijo.
Although he spoke gently and protected her from danger, //Timun Emas still felt uncertain about him.//
That night, they rested beside a quiet river while Arya tried to cook fish over a small fire.
For the first time since the terrifying chase began, Timun Emas smiled sincerely. During the following days, Arya continued helping her cross rivers, avoid wild animals, and hide from Buto Ijo.
Slowly, Timun Emas began trusting him.
One evening, Arya brought Timun Emas to an abandoned shrine hidden deep within the forest.
"You can rest here tonight,” Arya said gently. “Buto Ijo will never find us here
Exhausted after days of running, Timun Emas finally fell asleep beside the cold stone wall. However, sometime after midnight, she suddenly woke up after hearing [[heavy footsteps]] outside the shrine.
Hearing the fact that Arya is an adopted son of Buto Ijo, Timun Emas immediately stepped back in fear.
Arya quickly explained that he was once a human baby abandoned in the forest many years ago. Buto Ijo found him and raised him among the creatures of the forest.
“My father became cruel after humans began hunting magical creatures,” Arya said. “But I don’t want anyone else to die.”
For the next several days, they kept moving from place to place to avoid Buto Ijo. Sometimes they slept beneath giant trees, sometimes in the ruins of ancient temples, and sometimes beside misty rivers. During their journey, their relationship slowly began to change.
Slowly, Timun Emas began to trust him.
Timun Emas had lost any doubt toward Arya. They had this journey as if nothing dangerous chased them.
Do you wanna read their short love story?
[[YES, OF COURSE!]]
I prefer skip it, I am super curious already! [[Next]]
Standing near the entrance was Buto Ijo.
And beside him… stood Arya.
Timun Emas quickly reached for the magical bags, only to realize that two of them were missing.
“Why…?” she whispered shakily.
Arya lowered his head and quietly replied, "I am his adopted son, remember? You should not have trusted me. You are just too innocent, but it makes everything easier.”
"I thought you were brave and smart, but you are fool!", he added cruelly.
Buto Ijo laughed loudly. “You really believed him? Arya has always belonged to me"
Arya had only pretended to help her in order to trap her for Buto Ijo.
Desperately, Timun Emas used the remaining magical items to fight back, but without the complete set, her powers were not strong enough to stop the giant completely.
Soon, Buto Ijo cornered her near the edge of a dark cliff. Timun Emas looked toward Arya one last time, hoping he would save her. But Arya remained silent.
From that night on, nobody ever saw Timun Emas again.
Meanwhile, Arya disappeared together with Buto Ijo.
THE END.
One rainy night inside a cave, Timun Emas watched Arya trying to cook fish over a fire. Unfortunately, he burned it completely black.
Timun Emas burst into laughter and said, “That is even darker than the charcoal!”.
Arya sighed in embarrassment, “I grew up in the forest. I usually eat fruit. How was I supposed to know how to cook?”
For the first time since the chase began, they laughed together. Night after night, they grew closer. Arya often secretly watched Timun Emas sleeping beside the campfire.
Meanwhile, Timun Emas felt her heart race whenever Arya held her hand while helping her cross rivers or climb steep cliffs. Yet both of them were too shy to confess their feelings.
One afternoon, while resting in a field of wildflowers, Timun Emas asked:
“When all of this is over … what will you do?”
Arya smiled faintly, “I don’t know. Maybe I’ll leave and live far away from humans.”
“Why?”, ask Timun Emas.
“Because people are afraid of someone like me," Arya answered in melancholy.
Timun Emas looked at him gently. “I’m not afraid of you.”
Arya froze after hearing those words. From that moment on, the feelings they had hidden became harder to deny.
Unfortunately, Buto Ijo finally found them.
[[Next]]
On the night of the blood moon, Buto Ijo finally found them near the forbidden forest cliffs.
“ARYA!” the giant roared furiously. “YOU CHOOSE A HUMAN OVER ME?”
“Father, stop this!” Arya shouted back. “This will only bring destruction!”
But Buto Ijo attacked. A massive battle began. The earth cracked beneath Buto Ijo’s strikes. Arya protected Timun Emas from falling rocks while Timun Emas used the magical objects to fight back. The needlestransformed into a forest of sharp bamboo.
The salt turned into a raging sea. But Buto Ijo was far too powerful. In the middle of the battle, Buto Ijo struck Arya and threw him violently against a giant rock.
“Arya!” Timun Emas screamed.
At that time, Arya forced himself back to his feet despite his severe injuries.
“I won’t let anyone hurt her!”
For the first time, Arya confessed his feelings openly, "I like you, Timun Emas".
Timun Emas stared at him with tears in her eyes. “I like you too, Arya!”
[[The last fight]]
Hearing those words, Arya found the strength to stand beside her once more.
Together, they used the final magical object the shrimp paste. A gigantic black swamp burst from the ground and slowly swallowed Buto Ijo.
But before disappearing completely, the giant looked at Arya. There was no anger left in his eyes anymore. Only sadness. “Why did I help you long time ago if it ends this way …”
Then Buto Ijo sank into the swamp forever.
[[It is not over yet]]
After the battle ended, the village was left in chaos and Timun Emas rushed back to the village to find Mbok Sirni.
The old woman had spent days praying anxiously for her daughter’s safety. When she finally saw Timun Emas returning alive, Mbok Sirni broke into tears and embraced her tightly.
"I thought I lost you forever", she whispered.
The villagers were fear of him at first, knowing Arya was raised by Buto Ijo. Timun Emas convinced Arya to stayed. Then they help rebuild the village along with everybody.
Slowly, the people realized that Arya was not a monster and Mbok Sirni slowly accepted him like her own son
When Mbok Sirni grew older and weaker, Timun Emas and Arya cared for her with love until her final days. Before passing away peacefully, Mbok Sirni smiled warmly and said,
“Now I know… I was never truly alone.”
As time passed, their bond grew even stronger until they were finally married beneath the tree where the golden cucumber had first grown. The entire village celebrated their wedding with joy.
Timun Emas and Arya lived happily ever after.
THE END.
